Good news again came from Dongying modern animal husbandry demonstration area, i.e. the Yellow River farm, which is located in Huanghekou town of Kenli county, Dongying city on the afternoon of June 15th, 2015 , that the wheat demonstration field of Qingmai VI, an excellent wheat breed suitable for dry land, witnessed an average yield of 547.82 kg per mu(1 mu is equal to 0.067hectare). The demonstration field here is a part of science and technology demonstration project by Science and Technology Department of Shandong province , namely Bohai barn, a huge scientific and technological project in the agricultural field aiming at building China’s Bohai coastal region, which suffered from drought, waterlogging and salinity for a long time, to be an important national barn.
It is the third consecutive year that Qingmai VI creates a high yield record and makes a new breakthrough of the wheat yield in Saline-alkali Soil. In 2013, it realized an average yield of 449.01 kg per mu in Zhanhua county of Shandong province, and in 2014, the modern animal husbandry demonstration area of Dongying city saw an average yield of 538.1 kg per mu.
In the acceptance field, after a series of procedures like harvest, impurity removing, dehydration and weighting, the Qingmai VI demonstration field selected by experts achieved a yield of 547.82 kg per mu on average. The soil salt content of this field is between 0.2% and 0.3%, and the area is 3.075 mu, about 0.205 hectare.
Qingmai VI, a wheat breed with many outstanding features such as high yield, best in quality, good adaptability and being drought-resistant etc., was cultivated in 2007 after a ten-year science and technology research led by professor Lin Qi, who works with the School of Agriculture and Plant Protection of Qingdao Agricultural University(QAU). In the year of 2010 and 2012, this breed once created a high yield record of 620.7 kg and 703.5 kg per mu on average respectively in dry land without artificial watering during the whole growth stage, among which there was a ten-mu land with the average yield of 712.9 kg per mu.
Statistics show that, there is about 520 million mu of saline-alkali land in China, among which 16 million mu or so is in Shandong provice. The wheat production’s achieving 547.82 kg per mu in saline-alkali soil shows that, as long as appropriate breeds and technology are adopted, there is also a possibility to obtain high yield in the saline-alkali soil. It is of vital importance to make full use of these saline-alkali land and develop wheat plantation in the saline-alkali land, which can safeguard the national food security and increase the rural income.
