Recently, Qingdao Agricultural University (QAU) has made great progress in scallop breeding. Professor Wang Chunde from the School of Marine Science and Engineering successfully completed the sequencing and analysis of the purple scallop genome, which is the third scallop genome, following the farrer's scallop and the chlamys scallop. Relevant research results were published online in the open journal GigaScience. The first author of the thesis is Professor Li Chao from the School of Marine Science and Engineering. The co-author is Liu Xiao, a researcher at the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The correspondent author is professor Wang Chunde. The first signatory unit is Qingdao Agricultural University and the partner unit is the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The successful sequencing of the purple scallop genome lays the foundation for the determining mechanism of important traits and molecular breeding such as growth, stress resistance, fertility and longevity of purple scallop and its hybrid scallop at molecular level.
Purple scallops are medium-sized scallops native to Chile and Peru in South America. They are large in size and beautiful in color. And they are important local cultured scallop varieties, In 2007, Professor Wang Chunde successfully introduced the purple scallops from Peru the first time and successfully interplanted them with China's large-scale cultured American bay scallops, and cultivated hybrid scallops with outstanding advantages in growth, stress resistance and longevity. The weight is about 100% higher than that of ordinary bay scallops, and the largest individual reaches 206 grams. Starting from the hybrid generation, the research team has cultivated new varieties of hybrid scallops such as scallop "Bohaihong" and scallop "Qingnong 2" through multiple generations selection, which has effectively improved the coverage rate of fine species and led the new climax of the scallop breeding industry.
