The List of Added First-class Disciplines of Shandong Province was recently issued by the Education Department of Shandong to support the construction of 25 disciplines. The Fishery Discipline of Qingdao Agricultural University(QAU) is one of the 10 funded projects approved by the educational authority. This is the first time that QAU has been included into the ranks of first-class discipline construction in Shandong Province.

The advantages of our university in the fields of terrestrial husbandry have been given full play, and the principle of “ facilitating the sea by the land and coordinating the development of the both” has been thoroughly implemented over the years. Now, four stable subjects of fishery have been formed, new technologies for breeding and cultivation of aquatic products, research and development of feed, disease prevention and control, etc. are in the forefront of China. The newly cultivated hybrid scallop variety called "Red Bohai Sea" has been widely promoted in the sea areas of Shandong, Hebei, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, with a breeding area of more than 300,000 mu （about 20,000 hectares）and economic benefits of over 10 billion yuan. The developed high-quality, efficient and environment-friendly feed generates economic values of more than 1.5 billion yuan. Professor Nie Pin, the top talent who has reached the international leading level in the research on prevention and control of aquatic diseases in the the system of "One Project One Discussion", is also introduced in the fishery discipline.

The participation in the first-class disciplines in Shandong Province will further promote the significant development of the fishery course in teaching staff, scientific research platform, personnel training, academic exchanges and social services. It can continuously improve the capacity of the discipline to alleviate scarce marine fishery resources of Shandong Province or even China, breed improved aquatic varieties in serious shortage, update environmental-friendly farming model and the matched technologies and improve the technical system for monitoring, preventing and controlling disease.
