Another Hybrid Scallop Variety of QAU passes national Examination and Approval

Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs issued an announcement that 19 new aquatic products were approved by the Fifth National Aquatic Stock and Variety Approval Committee, including the new hybrid scallop variety “Qingnong NO.2” selected by the Qingdao Agricultural University Wang Chunde Group. It is the second hybrid scallop new variety selected by the research team after the scallop "Bohai Red".

The scallops cultured in northern China were mainly introduced from the United States in the 1980s. After years of breeding, the scallop culture industry has experienced high mortality and small size, which has seriously hindered the development of the industry. In order to solve this problem, starting from 2007, Wang Chunde's team introduced the excellent germplasm of purple scallop from Peru and crossed it with bay scallop, and for the first time obtained the purple sea hybrid with extremely significant heterosis. Starting from the generation of purple sea hybrids, after several generations of self-crossing breeding, the team selected the first hybrid scallop new variety “Bohai Red”, which has a purple-red color, which is 38% higher than that of ordinary bay scallops, and received the National Aquatic New Variety Certificate in the year. The scallop "Qingnong NO.2" is also a new variety selected from the purple sea hybrids, but its breeding route is different from the scallop "Bohai Red". In the breeding process, the team first handed over the purple sea hybrid generation back to the bay scallop, and then continuously carried out self-crossing for 4 generations to obtain a new variety with stable growth traits. The shell color was dark brown, compared with ordinary bay scallops. Under the same farming conditions, the weight of scallop "Qingnong NO.2" increased by about 45%, and the meat yield was slightly higher than that of scallop "Bohai Red".

At present, the scallop "Qingnong NO.2" is mainly cultivated in Yantai, Shandong Province and Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province. Together with the scallop "Bohai Red", it has become the main cultured species in northern China, and has made important contributions to the promotion of aquaculture in China.
