The Key Laboratory of Dryland Technology of Shandong Province at QAU had been established, developed and strengthened during the Ninth Five-Year Plan (1995-2000). By now it had become the important base of science research and special person training in semi-humid and easily arid region in China. The Key laboratory had achieved leading level in Shandong province and also advanced level in some parts of China. Now, it is the restrengthened key laboratory in the Tenth Five-Year plan (2001-2005) in Shandong province. At present, there are a high level research team in the Dryland Technology Key Laboratory, such as 2 specialistic technology leading persons, 5 middle and youth age learning core of Shandong province, 2 governmental agriculture advisors, 13 Ph.D. fellows and 2 in second-level discipline for Masters.
There are 4 research directions (Dryland crop physiology and ecology, New production technology in dryland crop, Drought tolerance germ plasm resource inventing and utilization, Nutrition and fertilizer in dryland crop) in the key laboratory now. It is the first laboratory in Shandong province that do the research about the theory and technology of high yield and water-saving. It makes sure the new ideas that the research core is finding the regulation of crop high yield and water consumption and the new aim is founding the new technology about crop high yield and water saving combining the plant physiology and crop cultivation and crop chemical control and dryland ecology.
The research such as the dryland wheat and peanut water consumption regulation and the alternating effect of water and fertilizer and the effects of water stress on crop drought tolerance had achieved the leading level in China. It had founded the theory and technology system about 1 mm waterfall producing 22.5Kg grain in 1 hectare and created many new records in dryland wheat in China. It also had developed the theory of crop chemical control and mechanical coating earlier than that of other units in dryland crop and produce a lot of regulator applying in crop production.
The laboratory had launched the research in gene engineering and as the first unit to develop the research about peanut gene and founded the gene bank in peanut wild species and also transferred the maize alcoholization protein gene to peanut and got the transgenic plant. It also had founded the high frequency technology in trans-gene and made a solid base to improve the variety using gene engineering and increasing the ability of crop drought tolerance.
The laboratory had done deeply and systematic research about the overcoming the distant hybridization incompatibility using cell fusion and transferring the excellent gene such as drought tolerance from wild species to cultivation species and doing the somatic cell hybridization in sweet potato, it had established the high-frequency plant rebuilding system in sweet potato protoplasm culture and got the sweet potato somatic cell hybrid in the same incompatible variety and in the incompatible hybridization and kindred wild species in the world.
The laboratory had made great achievement in fertilizer requiring regulation in dryland and the law of succession of soil fertilizer in dryland and the effect of artificial adjustment in clay mineral efflorescence with potassium. The long-term fertilizer localization experiment had been done 27 years and the longest fertilizer localization experiment in China and as a important base to develop basic and high-technology research in this discipline and initially constructed the manifold and multidiscipline soil resource and information bank. The laboratory had been in advanced level in the research about the physical and chemical effects of long-term organic and inorganic fertilizer applying singly or cooperatively and the effects of crop nutrition and drought tolerance.
The laboratory had advanced instruments and more than 470กม104 yuan RMB. The facilities of the automatic rain-proof shelter and the water controlling pool and root cellar had been in advanced level in China.
The Key Laboratory of Dryland Technology of Shandong Province at QAU had been significant advantage in the instruments and facilities for drought tolerance comparing with the same laboratory in China and supplied the safeguard for doing the high-level research and special person training.
