College of Sciences

College of Sciences, founded in 1977, was originally named Basic Teaching Department. In the nearly thirty years' teaching, great emphasis has been laid on the academic subject construction; in order to adapt to the continuous changing situation and social demand of qualified personnel, the institute has been divided into Department of Foreign Languages and Computer Sciences Department as well as such outstanding subjects as biological chemistry, botany and botany physiology. In 2003 Science Institute was constituted with the disciplines of mathematics, physics and chemistry of the formal Department. At present the institute includes three branches, respectively applied chemistry, information and computer science and physics, with three undergraduate majors: applied chemistry, information and computer science and material chemistry and 213 full-time undergraduates.
The institute has a staff of 97, among which are 9 professors, 21 associate professors, 17 lecturers, and 1 academic leader at college level. Seven of the 75 full-time teachers have got the doctor's degree, 41 master's degree; one has the honor of Famous Higher School Teacher in Shandong Province; three College-level Famous Higher School Teacher. 54.6% of the staff have master's or doctor's degree. The institute has set up a team of proper structure with teachers of high professional qualities.
The institute has done well in teaching and academic research. Besides teaching three four-year majors basic courses, it undertakes the teaching tasks of more than 30 courses for graduates and undergraduates in 18 departments. Since 1995 it has gained 7 prizes of "Provincial Excellent Teaching Fruit" and "Excellent Experimental Technological Fruit", and 15 prizes of "College-level Excellent Teaching Fruit" and "Excellent Experimental Technological Fruit"; such prizes as "College Teaching Quality Prize", "Liu He Prize"and "Zheng Da Prize" have been awarded 16 times to teachers in this institute. In order to do well in academic construction, the institute has made great efforts to strengthen scientific research and improve the research level. Since the National Ninth Five-year Plan, the institute has participated in dozens of academic and teaching reform projects. 20 prizes have been gained and more than 300 academic papers published, among which 30 papers have been edited by SCI, SITP and CA and many others have been published in foreign journals or read in many international conferences. More than 20 teaching books have been edited and published, in which the book Advanced Mathematics has been listed as a programmed book for agricultural and forestry colleges during the Tenth Five-year Plan.
Two labs for chemistry and physics have been granted as Shandong Province A-level Lab for Basic Courses Teaching and B-level Lab for Basic Courses Teaching respectively. In 2004 the Chemistry Lab has passed smoothly the mid-term evaluation by a team of experts from the Model Center of Shandong Province Basic Courses Experimental Teaching. With sophisticated teaching instruments and high-quality technicians, the lab can provide convenient conditions for teaching and academic research.
