College of Environmental Arts

The College of Environmental Arts was set up in 2001. Among the current 32 faculty members, there are 2 professors, 5 associate professors, and 6 lecturers. And one is the member of Chinese Artists Association, one the member of Chinese Industrial Designers Association. The department has three teaching research rooms, which are respectively garden, fine arts and art design. We've got many studying buildings, namely, one computer picture design studio, one ornamental plant laboratory, twelve standard studios, and twelve standard designing rooms. The major, ornamental plants and horticulture science, is the earliest ones authorized with master degree within Shangdong province.

I. Major Courses

1. Landscape garden design major (four-year for bachelor, three-year for specialty)

Objective:
To bring up senior specialists in accord with the demand of market economy, who will have a full development of morality, knowledge, and physical condition, as well as the techniques for ornamenta flower and landscape planning and designing, and the ability to conduct garden construction and garden management.
Main Courses:
College English, High Arithmetic, Computer, Botany, floriculture, Ornamental Trees, Ornamental Plant Planting and Maintenance, Ornamental Plant Pest Control, Urban Garden Greenbelt Design, Landscape Art and Design, Garden Architecture, Garden Botany, etc.
Job Tendency:
City Construction Commission, Garden and Management Sector, Acad., Scientific Research and Development Units of Garden .

2. Art Design major (four-year for bachelor, three-year for specialty)

Objective:
To bring up senior specialists with comprehensive quality, who will have comprehensive knowledge and a good insight of aesthetics to fit in with the needs of modern design, and become competent in environmental and art design, interior and exterior design, exhibiting and public art design, science research and teaching.
Main Courses:
Sketch, Color, Design Basis, Interior Design, Computer- aided Design, Urban Planning and Design, Landscape Planning and Design, Landscape and Plant Allocation, Urban Greenbelt Planning, Decorating Materials, Furniture Design, History of Design, etc.
Job Tendency:
City Construction Committee, Gardening Department, Acad., Culture and Art Company, Artistic Ads Design Company, etc.

3. Ornamental plant and fancy horticulture major (three-year for Master degree)

To bring up senior agricultural specialists in accord with the demand of socialistic market economy, who can meet the requirement of new agricultural technology revolution, and become competent in doing the scientific research of ornamental plant and fancy horticulture, as well as the technological development and business management.

II. Research Fields

1. Ornamental Plant Genetics and Breeding:

Focusing on the research of ornamental plant hereditary rule, floriculture variety classification, breeding new variety of floriculture and ornamental trees, etc.

2. Landscape Design and Floriculture Application:

Focusing on the application research and development of park, community beautification, interior environmental decoration (including bonsai, flower arrangement), etc.

3. Ornamental Plant Cultivation Technique Research:

Focusing on the main problems existing in the floriculture production, such as no- soil cultivation techniques, in order to improve the quality of floriculture products and yield of the outputs, and to promote the development of floriculture industry.

4. Fresh-cut Flower Conservation and fresh-protecting Technique and Principles:

Focusing on the principles of fresh flowers-cutting fresh-protecting process, and the research for new fresh flowers-cutting techniques, in order to solve the problem of annual supply in floriculture market.

III. An Introduction to Research Sections

The staff in ornamental plant genetics and breeding laboratory, whose director is Dr.Liu Qinghua, usually uses molecular biology and routine breeding technology to mark, evaluate, selecte and apply important gene resources of featuring ornamental plants, selects and breeds new varieties with appreciating value and extensive application prospect in greening and beautifing.

IV. Main Scientific Research Achievements

In recent years, we have carried out more than 20 research projects, including the state, the provincial and the departmenta levels, and won 20 over provincial and departmental scientific research achievement. Now we have gradually formed the characteristic research fields in the ornamental plant breeding, new floriculture variety breeding, floriculture no-soil cultivating and so on. In addition, we have published more than 130 academic papers in the domestic and foreign academic publications, and more than 10 teaching books and academic monographs.
