Provincial Key Discipline of Animal Genetics and Breeding Reproduction
- Animal genetics and breeding reproduction of QAU is well-known for its glorious history of over 5 decades. In 1996, it was approved as one of the shandong-provincial key disciplines by education division of shandong province. In recent years, many efforts have been made to strengthen discipline development by recruiting many talent people and investing about 3 million yuan for equipments and labs. Among its employees, many have received major grants from various funding agencies, including those from the national and local governments. Now, Animal breeding and genetics reproduction discipline of QAU is enjoying its fame of being fruitful in major education and such academic areas as animal somatic cloning , economically specialized animal production and agricultural animal breeding and so on.
- Animal cloning technology is a hot-spot in life science. Since in the 80s of last century, scientists at animal embryo center have achieved much in the field of animal embryo transfer and 2 achievements have been honored with shandong-provincial S&T rewards. In 2001, the news that the somatic cloning cattle "yangyang" and "shaungshuang" were born at QAU suggested that Embryo engineering research group is an important force in developing animal embryo engineering in China.
- Animal breeding and genetics research group is honored with many fruits, long-supported and well-established research directions, is presiding national or shandong-provincial key programs in animal breeding and genetics of economically specialized animal, poultry and sheep.
- (1) fur- and feather-producing animal breeding
- Finished projects: "breeding new line of long-fur rabbit ", "breeding rex rabbit"
- Honors and awards: The first shandong-provincial S&T award; The third national S&T award; The third shandong-provincial S&T award.
- Under-investigating programs: "breeding hare rabbit and developing in-summer reproduction skills", "breeding and exploring Dong-xin horse deers", "exploring and spreading new rex rabbit lines".
- (2) poultry breeding
- Finished projects: 1. the relationship between chromosomal compositions, physiological & biological indexes and tolerance in indigenous poultry breeds; 2. the association between nutrition level and performance in different growth stages of Wulong goose; 3. the skills for storage and dilution of cryopreserved sperms of chicken.
- Honors and awards: The second shandong-provincial S&T award (twice)
- The third shandong-provincial S&T award (3 times)
- Under-investigating projects: Breeding high-quality light chickens; Breeding Wulong(Huoyan) geese
- Build-up of commercial lines production system and MAS in Wulong geese
- Achievements: the performances of Wulong geese have been improved to a advanced stage of international level. Wulong geese breed is becoming a key commercial line in geese industrialization in China. In 2001, Wulong geese was listed in the names of nationally conserved animal breeds.
- (3)sheep breeding
- Since in the 90s of last century, achievements have been made in national or local R&D programs. In recent years, as a member of research units of key programs of Chinese agricultural minister and R&D programs of Jiling, Xinjiang provinces, research group is working with programs "breeding and applying high quality Merino sheep", "applying mordern skills to breeding a super Merino sheep line".
- This research direction is featured with "animal disease prevention, immunology and hygiene". More than 10 national or provincial projects, including "study on system engineering of disease prevention & controlling in large-scale pig farm ", "study on the effects of Chinese medicine and polysaccharide on immune regulation in chicken and the way of making immunopotentiators " and "study on the composite earthworm nutrition juice and its application in pig production", have been done or are being conducted at international level by animal breed hygiene research group which is honored with 3 "second shandong-provincial S&T award". Now, animal breed hygiene research group at Qingdao agricultural university is playing a significant role in improving productivity of shandong-provincial husbandry.
